Turner tops out $64M New York trades education facility

Turner Construction has reached a significant milestone on a higher education project in New York state. The contractor has topped out the Applied Technology Education Center at Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) in Troy, a 130,000-square-foot structure designed to prepare students for in-demand occupations, according to a July 30 news release. The project carries a price tag of $64 million, as reported by HVCC.

Upon completion, the center will offer state-of-the-art learning environments tailored to careers in advanced manufacturing, semiconductor technology, engineering, robotics, clean energy, and other rapidly expanding industries. These spaces include specialized laboratories, flexible instructional areas, collaborative learning zones, and industry-focused training facilities.

During construction, Turner coordinated closely with HVCC to minimize disruptions to campus activities while adhering to the project's schedule and safety protocols.

The milestone comes amid broader challenges in higher education construction. Universities across the country are grappling with budget constraints, and the renovation backlog has reached its highest point in years, according to industry data.

For HVCC, the center is progressing as New York presents a contrasting landscape for advanced technology sectors. On one hand, roughly two hours from Troy, the $100 billion Micron chip fabrication project is underway in Clay, a development expected to transform Central New York. On the other hand, the state has introduced a significant obstacle for future data center work, as Governor Kathy Hochul recently signed an executive order curbing environmental permits for such facilities.

HVCC's Applied Technology Education Center is slated to open in 2027, according to the college.
