San Antonio-based infrastructure builder Zachry Construction is seizing growth opportunities in the water sector. The company recently announced that it has broken ground on a chlorine and sulfur dioxide containment building project for the Central Regional Wastewater System in Dallas. The project owner, Trinity River Authority (TRA), has authorized a contract with Zachry for approximately $108 million, a figure based on TRA's meeting minutes released on December 5.

As the prime contractor, Zachry aims to modernize critical wastewater treatment infrastructure, including improvements to containment structures, utilities, and systems within the facility. According to the announcement, the contractor will construct a new chlorine and sulfur dioxide containment building, a supplemental chlorine storage building, pump stations, and related site facilities, while also undertaking site clearing, grading, paving, stormwater drainage, road construction, various piping work, and installation of electrical and instrumentation systems.

"This project will help strengthen Trinity River Authority's critical treatment infrastructure and demonstrates our team's ability to deliver such complex civil and water projects with a strong focus on safety, coordination, and lasting quality," said Tyler Farella, Vice President at Zachry Construction, in a press release.

Across the construction industry, contractors are focusing on opportunities in water infrastructure. As demand rises, multiple contractors, including Zachry, Burns & McDonnell, and Ferrovial, have taken on water projects, particularly in Texas.

To this end, Zachry acquired water infrastructure company Crescent Constructors last fall to deepen its presence in this sector and continues to place such opportunities at the core of its business development. On April 21, the company appointed Travis Mross as its next president, further strengthening its commitment to water projects.

According to the announcement, the expected completion time for the Trinity River Authority project is the fourth quarter of 2029.
