The San Antonio Spurs have selected two contractors to manage the construction of their new home arena. The five-time NBA champions announced in a press release Tuesday that they have chosen Mortenson and Bartlett Cocke General Contractors to jointly oversee construction management for their planned downtown arena.

The arena carries a project cost of $1.3 billion, according to Bexar County's fiscal year 2025-2026 budget documents. The documents further state that Bexar County will provide $311 million for the new arena, the City of San Antonio will contribute $489 million, and the Spurs will cover the remainder, including any cost overruns.

Minneapolis-based Mortenson says it has worked on several major sports venues, including multiple NBA arenas. San Antonio-based Bartlett Cocke, a local builder, has completed numerous commercial projects in the area over the past six decades.

The selection expands on the project team announced in May. At that time, the Spurs had chosen Creative Artists Agency Icon as project manager, Pape-Dawson as civil engineer, and Overland International as arena architect.

CAA Icon and Mortenson have collaborated on several sports projects in the past, including the $1.9 billion Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas in 2019. On that project, CAA ICON provided project management services, while Mortenson and McCarthy Building Cos. formed a joint venture as general contractor. In 2021, the two partnered again on the $1.15 billion Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, a National Hockey League (NHL) venue.

According to the City of San Antonio, the planned downtown arena will be the centerpiece of the city's new sports and entertainment district. In addition to the arena, other projects in the district include:

  • Expansion of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.
  • Construction of a new convention center hotel.
  • Building a land bridge over I-37 to connect the East Side with downtown.
  • Renovation and upgrades to the Alamodome.
  • Renovation of the John Wood Courthouse into a live entertainment venue.
