In-Depth Analysis

Two of Musk's companies—Tesla and SpaceX—are each working toward a common goal: achieving annual100 gigawattsof solar manufacturing capacity in the U.S. Musk stated this at the World Economic Forum earlier this year.

"That would probably take about three years," Musk said at the event. He added that China manufactures solar cells at "extremely low cost," making "large-scale solar manufacturing" in the U.S. "worth doing."

According to a Bloomberg report in May, SpaceX has filed permit applications to build a10-gigawattsolar cell factory in Bastrop, Texas, to construct aerospace-grade infrastructure for its orbital data centers.

Currently, Tesla designs its solar panels and systems in California and assembles them in Buffalo, New York, with an annual capacity exceeding300 megawatts. Project Crystal Sun would significantly expand Tesla's capacity.

According to Comptroller's Office documents, Tesla is considering multiple U.S. locations for the proposed solar cell manufacturing facility, but has not disclosed other sites beyond the Fort Bend County location. The electric vehicle and robotics manufacturer is seeking state incentives to offset property taxes, including support under the Texas Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation Act (JETI).

Tesla stated that without JETI incentives, the Fort Bend County site would be less competitive than another unnamed location.

In the first half of this year, Tesla's revenue from its energy generation and storage segment, which covers solar and battery systems, was$5.5 million, roughly flat compared to the same period last year.

Although the energy business accounts for a much smaller share of earnings than vehicle sales, the company said in its latest report that it is focused on increasing production of energy storage products and developing its solar manufacturing and battery technology.

"The future demand for electricity will be enormous," Musk said on the July 22 earnings call, noting demand growth from transportation electrification and artificial intelligence.

"We are working to achieve the most ambitious buildout of advanced infrastructure and manufacturing capacity in history," he said.

SpaceX recently advanced plans to invest$16.8 billionto build a 100-million-square-foot Terafab semiconductor manufacturing facility in Grimes County, Texas. The first phase of construction is set to begin this year, with an expected 3,000 jobs.
